New Zealand’s Best Winter Activities

New Zealand is a country that is all about the outdoors – and as the temperature drops, the outdoor action only heats up.

The country is a hive of activity in the cooler months and serves up something different with the changing seasons, from water fun, to natural exploration, high thrills and snow action.

With winter just around the corner, these are our top 6 picks for an escape to this winter wonderland.

Hit the Slopes

It’s not quite a winter getaway without strapping your feet into some skis or a board. There is no shortage of ski resorts to choose from; however Mt Ruapehu, just a short drive from Taupo in the North and Queenstown’s Remarkables in the South are among the best.

Steaming Springs

Scattered with Hot Springs in every corner of the country, there is nothing quite like having a soak in a natural steaming spring while surrounded by snow. For views of the snow-capped Southern Alps and breathtaking Lake Tekapo in the Christchurch region, you can’t go past the Tekapo Springs.

Whale Watching

Whale migration season is very conveniently located in June and July, making winter in New Zealand a prime time to feast your eyes on a humpback, blue or southern right whale species. The coastal town of Kaikoura is one of the best destinations for the whale watching season as they first hit the South Island’s shoreline.

Festival Fun

Over four massive days, watch as Queenstown erupts into an extravaganza of fireworks, parties, live music, comedy shows, attractions and mountain inspired fun at the Queenstown Winter Festival from 22 – 25 June. The annual event is the country’s biggest celebration of winter and is a guaranteed great time for all members of the family.

Adventure Awaits

It wouldn’t be a trip to New Zealand without a bit of high thrill fun. Wanaka in the South Island is a treasure trove of winter action, from dog sled tours to snow and ice driving experiences, snow tubing and snow mobile tours.

Wine Trails

Winter, wilderness and world-class wine – it’s a match made in heaven. Famous for its extensive range of cool-climate varieties, there is no better time to watch the wineries in action, learn about the process and of course, have a taste too! There is no shortage of wine regions to enjoy a good drop, but Marlborough at the top of the South Island puts on a pretty good show.
